THE CHALLENGE
In April 2023, John Holland launched a new energy and renewables business in Australia, targeting the growing pipeline of renewable energy projects. With the Australian government setting a target of a 43 percent reduction in emissions by 2030, the need for investment in energy is more significant than ever before. The goal of the business is to capture the emerging and rapidly-growing renewable energy market in Australia; with Australia’s investment in energy infrastructure set to reach AUD $80 billion over the next 15 years. The newly-formed business has now assembled an A team and developed an internal (‘inside-out’) view of its strategy to grow the business.
THE APPROACH
Fostering a “Customer-Centric” and High-Performing Team Culture.
To address the team culture challenge, The Strategy Group ran a collaborative workshop with the Energy leadership team focused on:
- Introducing client-centric principles and their application to delight clients.
- Establishing a foundation for a high-performing team culture through real-life role-play exercises.
Following the workshop, the team members created individual 90-day action plans, which were then consolidated into a comprehensive master plan.
The Strategy Group partnered with John Holland to validate the strategy through “Outside-In” client research:
- Select and recruit 10-15 relevant client stakeholders for individual empathic interviews.
- Conduct and synthesise in-depth interviews to gather actionable insights.
- Facilitate a strategy refinement workshop with the leadership team to validate and refine the Energy Business strategy based on client feedback.
OUTCOMES
Delivering actionable insights and strategic alignment for success
The project delivered clear and actionable outcomes:
- A Team Culture Report included the team’s purpose, behaviours, customer personas, roles, and a 90-day action plan, along with customer-centric guidelines for client engagement.
- A Strategy Document synthesising client insights and a refined Energy Business Strategy, positioning John Holland to succeed in the renewable energy market.
Through this process, the Energy leadership team was equipped with the tools, alignment, and insights needed to drive the success of the new business.
