Every council delivers hundreds of services, from major infrastructure programs to the everyday requests residents barely think twice about: reporting a barking dog, updating an address, flagging an over grown property, replacing a damaged bin. It's easy to assume the small, routine services don't matter much. In our experience redesigning services with councils, they're often where the biggest efficiency gains are hiding in plain sight.
That's the idea behind our new podcast series, Streamlining Council Services for Efficiency.
Over four weeks, our Director Pierre sits down for a short, focused conversation on one everyday council service per episode. Each conversation covers the same ground: where the service breaks down, why it happens, and what a better, more efficient version looks like in practice. No jargon, no theory, just practical service redesign drawn from real council work.
The series is built around a simple idea: the experience residents have and the efficiency of the team delivering it aren't competing goals. Get the service design right, and both improve together. Councils can deliver a better experience for residents while freeing up real time and capacity internally, doing more, and doing it faster, without adding head count.
Episode 1: Barking Dogs
Most councils treat a barking dog complaint as a compliance issue first. That instinct is exactly what creates so much unnecessary friction, for residents and officers alike.
Episode 2: Change of Address
A change of address request seems like the simplest thing a council handles. It's also one of the easiest to get wrong, and one of the most revealing about how services are actually built.
Episode 3: Overgrown Allotments
An overgrown allotment complaint looks straightforward on paper. In practice, it's often a slow, frustrating experience for everyone involved, and the reason why comes down to the order things happen in.
Episode 4: Damaged Bins
Replacing a damaged bin should be quick and simple. When it isn't, the cause usually has very little to do with technology.
These four services are examples, not the whole story. The same patterns, reactive processes, unclear communication, and technology bolted on to a broken process, show up across almost every service a council delivers. The principles in this series apply just as well to the services we haven't covered here.
The first episode is live today, with a new episode releasing each week for four weeks. Watch each episode as it drops, and if any of it sounds familiar, book a session with Pierre to talk through where your own services might have room to work better, for residents and for your teams.
